To increase your productivity, the cut, copy and paste actions are smart by default : they select by themselves the word you want to cut/copy/replace if nothing is selected.
If you don't want to use this feature, since they use the normal shortcuts of Cut and Copy commands, go in the preferences dialogs to the "Graphical User Interface" -> "Actions" page, and remove the "Extended Cut" and "Extended Copy" commands.
(Ctrl+X, Shift+Del)
If nothing is selected, the word at the current caret position is selected. The selection is then cut to the clipboard.
(Ctrl+C, Ctrl+Ins)
If nothing is selected, the word at the current caret position is selected. The selection is then copied to the clipboard.
(Ctrl+B, Ctrl+Shift+V)
If nothing is selected, the word at the current caret position is selected. The selection is then replaced by the content of the clipboard.
